    Happiness is...
...an assay that FINALLY gives beautiful data after 2 weeks of not cooperating. I hope the reviewers of my manuscript are happy now.

I shall now leave the lab happy. In the last 5 years, I can probably count the times that's happened on 1 hand!

    All good things...
...must come to an end. I go back to lab tomorrow, and Gavin starts day care.

Any suggestions for how to make the transition from home to work easier? I'm sure some parents out there have some wisdom they can share...thanks!

    I miss my hubby
Day 3 of my week-long trip to the east coast, and I miss A already. Gavin does, too--I can tell. Luckily, the little guy has been a great sport, being cute for all the visitors and sleeping fairly well. Yesterday was a record day for going through outfits, though. Between spit-up and, well, other things, he went through every sleeper I'd brought. I hope he takes it a little easier when we're at the conference, because I don't know if we're going to be able to do laundry at the hotel.

It's pouring rain here, and it poured the whole way over, too (NOT fun on the PA turnpike--I don't recommend it!). Why does it rain every time I go to Philly?

Tomorrow we head down to Washington for leg 2 of the journey. Time to put on my science hat...woo hoo!

P.S. A made some great mix CDs for all the hours in the car, and I have to give him extra special kudos for Molly's Bitchin' Workout mix. It was totally energizing and funny, too. Can't wait to take it to the gym!

Hee hee...I'm right here, silly quotation!

    Show me the thechemgoddess!

Which movie was this quote from?

    Get your own quotes:

(I must do homage to a very special English professor, who taught me that "quote" is a verb, and "quotation" is a noun. I may be in science, but I remember some grammar!)

    Milestones
My son is 13 days old today. So far we've been through a lot!

I got a spinal headache, which is now gone (thanks to the wonders of modern anesthesiology).

I've been peed on 6 times (but never lost my cool).

We've been out together on errands once already.

I've been out alone on an errand once, too (that felt really weird!).

We've visited A's lab, as well as mine.

He's met all but one of his grandparents.

We've been to our first SCA meeting.

He's gotten to spend "guy time" with A. every night he's been home.

I've had my first drink (half a glass of red wine--divine!).

    A. and I have probably done 10 loads of laundry already!

My review article is done, and will probably be sent out today (!).

Today I'm hoping to take enough pictures to capture his entire repertoire of expressions. Should take quite a while, since he has so many, but it will be worth it. I know I'm biased, but he's quite the cutie, especially when he opens those big blue eyes.

Thanks to everyone who has sent congratulations and good wishes our way. We're so glad to share our happiness with all of our friends!

    brain...full...
So my brain's been working pretty hard lately. They say that pregnancy can make you dumb, or something silly like that, but I think I'm doing OK.

Exhibit A: I got my NIH grant, which I wrote during my first trimester. I remember being tired while writing it, but not wanting to tell my boss I was pregnant until it was finished so I could prove to him that I could still be functional while growing another human being. It's very exciting to be a real PI on my very own grant. And it also means I have the money for the lab to buy me a new computer, so I don't have to worry every time I turn this one off that it will never come on again.

Exhibit B: I'm writing a review article, and it doesn't suck. Yeah, it got long-winded for a while in draft 2, but I'm now I'm into draft 3, and adding an extra section that my advisor wanted. Luckily, it's going more quickly than I expected. I thought I didn't care about activated sulfhydryl intermediates, but now I decided they're very interesting. And I am eternally grateful to every lab that actually measured rate constants for their formation and breakdown, and made some attempt to mimic intracellular conditions. Without their work (which sounds boring), my article would be a lot weaker. So yay for obscure physical organic chemistry labs in Germany!

I wish I could give another example, but I'm tied up with writing right now and have no other ways to test my brain power. Hopefully it will next show itself in my ability generate DATA...not just write about other people's work. THEN I will be a successful grad student. It's all about the data!

With 2 weeks to go, Gavin is learning all kinds of different ways to stretch his body out as much as possible, poking and kicking me just about everywhere. I am amazed at how hard he can push in 2 directions at once! I am looking forward to going to 1 last event pregnant (ToC tomorrow!), finishing this review article, and then having him come out...in that order, of course.

OK, time to finish off the section on thiyl radicals. Yay chemistry! I will not fall asleep!

    Ooo, surgery...
So I stayed home from SCA meeting tonight to work, and for the most part, I've done a good job of staying on task. Sometimes I put the TV on low volume in the background while I read or write, and I've found that Wednesday night TV generally sucks. But at 10 PM, Extreme Surgery comes on, and today it's an awesome show about a guy who fixes vascular birthmarks. It's super interesting and complicated because of the involvement of blood vessels in the lesions...makes me really miss medicine. Sometimes I really can't wait to go back to med school!

I also missed the Super Bowl kickoff because of another surgery show--this one about multi-visceral transplantation. That's when they transplant a whole bunch of viscera (stomach, pancreas, intestines, and liver) all at once. I had never heard of that...it was absolutely amazing. I can't believe it works! It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen.

So go ahead and give me geek points, but I gotta say I LOVE surgery! At least watching it...don't know how I feel about doing it yet. It'll be at least a year and a half before I go back to the clinic, and who knows if I'll do surgery first...but for now, I'm happy living vicariously through these amazing shows. Waaaaaaaaay cool!

    Nice things...
Quite a few nice things happened today. It's not often that good things come in bunches so I thought I would list them:

    - The person in the IACUC office finally gave me a letter documenting approval of our animal protocol that I must now send off to the NIH. Apparently, once they receive it they can activate my grant! Until they officially tell me I got the grant, I'm afraid to celebrate. But they've already asked me when I want to activate it, which suggests it's been approved. How about tomorrow?

    - My kinetics experiments tentatively worked today, after a month of not quite giving me any definitive answers. I'm hoping the lab gods will continue to look favorably upon me through the weekend!

    - The furniture place called and said the crib arrived so we set a delivery date. Originally they said it wouldn't come until the baby's due date, so this was an unexpected surprise. I can't wait to set it up and put the dragon sheets on it!

    - I had a great workout. I was so sleepy I almost didn't go to the gym at all...but I did and I felt awesome afterwards. Plus when I was there, more random people told me I looked great for being 8 months pregnant. When people that you know tell you that you look good, you never know if they're just being polite. But when strangers tell you that you look great, you figure they probably really think so. Even better, the people who talked to me did not follow up their comments with horror stories about labor and delivery, but rather with happy stories about how great it is to have kids. Now THAT's unusual.

    - It was TV night at home (yay Grey's Anatomy!), although lonelier than usual since A was working late.

    - I have lots of leftover cake from the shower, and I brought it into school today for snacks. Mmmm!

Speaking of the shower, it was absolutely lovely, and I was very fortunate to have such a great party. The room was beautiful, with stained glass in some of the windowpanes, and the snow looked beautiful falling outside through the colored glass. The cake was amazing--a road leading up to a castle, complete with vines and a moat. And the company was perfect. So many family and friends braved the snow to gather together. We've had so much fun going through the gifts, putting things away, and getting everything set up for the big day...which is only 4 weeks away!

My nice day would get nicer if A would come home from lab. Come home, sweetie! I hope all the experiments made the late stay worth it...

P.S. Event commentary: I forgot to post about the Cleftlands event over the weekend! It was great! It was wonderful to see so many people and catch up with so many friends. I ended up being busier than I ever imagined even though I didn't have any official tasks until court, when the musicians guild sang for TRH. They also sang at feast, and sounded fantastic. I'm so proud of how far we've come in just a few years, and I know that we'll continue to grow under the new leadership of Alex and Zsof. Feast was crowded, but lots of fun and I had a blast sitting next to B. Alex. People were so nice, helping me to lug heavy things back and forth from my car, because A was at the chiv retreat and you can only carry so much with a giant belly in the way. Best of all, since it was a local event, I got to come home to my own house and sleep in my own bed.

I've always wanted to be tall...
...and according to this article, I am!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070118/hl_nm/pregnant_dc

Even better, I should have a light baby because I'm "tall" AND exercise. Of course the decrease in weight is only ~600g...but I bet every little bit counts during delivery! (which is rapidly approaching...5.5 weeks if he comes on time...oh boy!)

    progress
In roughly 2.5 days, we have:
    - painted the walls of Gavin's room to look like a castle and the surrounding landscape
    - painted lots and lots of stones on the castle walls
    - painted the doors to look like wood
    - put together the cute castle-shaped shelves from IKEA
    - put up some amazing red taffeta curtains
    - hung the lights that look like torches

We're liking the room so much, we'll probably be spending all our time in there until Gavin arrives!

Amazingly we have also managed to work on finishing touches on the bathroom, go into lab, exercise, and eat yummy home cooked meals (I tend to indulge in cooking while on vacation). So life has been rather well-balanced despite the painting overload.

Christmas was wonderful! I spent most of it playing with cars, trains, play doh, and a game for 3-year-olds called Elefun. I hope our son turns out as adorable and well-mannered as our nephews...although I don't plan on buying him as many noisy toys. (There was much banging of percussion instruments and racing of talking cars.)

January is going to be a very busy month...time to rest up for it...good night!

    Oh boy, a HOLIDAY meme!
I am bursting with holiday excitement, so this meme gave me an opportunity to think about my most favorite subject of all: Christmas! Oh BOY!

    1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate? Hot Chocolate. Who would want to DRINK eggs? Icky!

    2. Does Santa wrap the presents or just set them under the tree? I thought the elves did the wrapping...

    3. Colored or white lights on the tree/house? I grew up with white, which made me want colored more than anything. But I think we have and use both in our house.

    4. Do you hang mistletoe? No. Where do you get it anyway?

    5. When do you put up your decorations? Within a week or two after Thanksgiving. Once I made an advent calendar in October because I was so excited for Christmas. My mom made me take it down because she was having a PTA meeting in the living room and didn't want people to think we decorated that early for Christmas. I was horribly offended, and clearly am still not over it!

    6. What is your favorite holiday dish? Those ice cream things shaped like snowmen or trees or santas. We used to have them as kids with our Ohio relatives. I saw some in the store the other day and I think they've shrunk 1000000% since I was a kid.

    7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? Seeing the living room for the first time on Christmas morning with presents piled high under the tree. Especially after waking up at 4 AM and waiting til daylight to come downstairs!

    8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa? I don't remember...but I don't think I was very traumatized. I have a feeling that my parents didn't work very hard to convince me in the first place...my mom's Jewish and never seemed too into Santa anyway.

    9. Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve? Isn't that cheating?

    10. How do you decorate your Christmas Tree? We buy a real tree and put lights and ornaments on it. Usually we listen to Nat King Cole in the background. I grew up listening to his Christmas album, and we still play the record when we're in Philadelphia at Christmastime.

    11. Snow! Love or Dread it? Love it, except when it covers the hill I walk down to get to school. It's like trying to inch your way down an icy roller coaster. I'm surprised I haven't broken my neck once in the 5 years I've been at Case.

    12. Can you ice skate? A little. My ankles roll in a lot. Haven't tried in years

    13. Do you remember your favorite gift as a child? I am very embarrassed to say this, but it was probably the My Little Pony Ballet Studio. I don't think I played with it much after Christmas, but that day it seemed like the coolest thing I'd ever owned. There is a picture of me opening it with my jaw hitting the floor. I guess I thought it was the best invention ever.

    14. What is the most important thing about the Holidays for you? The Christmas spirit!

    15. Favorite holiday dessert? My aunt Judy's butter cookies. She makes great Christmasy shapes, and isn't afraid to use lots of food coloring. Her red icing is always bright red, not a cheesy pink. She always let the kids help her decorate and I loved doing it when I was little.

    16. What is your favorite holiday tradition? Going to hear the Messiah, no matter who's doing it (although Apollo's Fire is my favorite)

    17. What tops your tree? We still need a tree topper! Maybe we'll put a hat on it this year.

    18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving? Giving. I am so impatient to give my gifts that it drives me crazy every year. Just ask A...I get antsy waiting and am terrible at keeping secrets!

    19. What is your favorite Christmas song? I've had so many. I think now it is "There is no Rose of Such Virtue" but only one specific version of it. I've only heard it on one recording and it's so beautiful it gives me chills every time I hear it. Past favorites include God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, In Dulci Jubilo, and Once in Royal David's City.

    20. Candy Canes! yum or yuck? Used to be yum. Now I just don't like candy. Yuck.

    21. What is your favorite holiday movie? That is so hard! Either A Christmas Story or Love Actually. This year I asked for the old claymation version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer as a gift. Some of the old movies are the best.

Boo, no more questions. I guess it's time to go back to writing my committee meeting report. Which is definitely yuckier than a candy cane (see #20).

    Happy thoughts
So this week I promised myself I wouldn't spend every night in the lab. But here I am for the second night in a row, here til 9. Grrr... But instead of complaining, I thought I would list some really wonderful things to be happy about. It's so easy to get stressed during the holidays, and I don't want to lose sight of these great things:

    1) We were given about 1,000,000,000 pieces of baby clothing over Thanksgiving. My aunt's second son grew out of his 6 month clothes, so we now have zillions of sleepers, shirts, pants, hats, and miscellaneous baby items for Gavin's first 6 months. There's nothing like a free wardrobe--we're very lucky!

    2) We had a great Thanksgiving with both of our families together for the first time. It was great to have A's dad and sister come to my parents' house. And I can't wait to have Christmas with our nephews. They get cuter and funnier every time we see them.

    3) The weather has been really warm. That makes walking up the hill to my car at 9 PM far less miserable than it could be at this time of year...

    4) We found lots of really cute dragon/castle items at IKEA for Gavin's room. I only wish there were stores closer to us that realized that dragon decor is cool!

    5) I was finally able to cash in credit card miles for a gift card to Home Depot. Now our bathroom remodeling will be a little easier on our wallets. Yay!

    6) My mom is flying me to Philadelphia to see her choral group perform with Piffaro...just days after my committee meeting. So I will get a wonderful treat after the mad scramble for data that will take place over the next 2 weeks.

Once this assay is done I can leave. It's about time, 'cause I'm bored now! But overall I made good progress today. It's unusual to be able to say that, so I will be thankful for that, too.

    big day...or rather, LONG day
This makes the fourth night in a row that I'm in lab afer 9 PM. And that's after arriving at 8 or 9 every day, not just rolling in at 11 and staying late 'cause I was lazy getting in. These have been full days of work, punctuated by seminars, lab meeting, and, of course, the gym. Right now I'm at the mercy of my anion exchange column. I thought the protein I'm purifying would have eluted by now, but it's being stubborn. And the column is dripping SO slowly! I started it at 6:45 last night and it's still not finished. I like a lot of aspects of protein purification, but not that I can't make the column flow any faster. If I wait til tomorrow to collect my samples, the activity will be gone. So I'm here until my protein comes off, and then I get to go through several more steps before it's stable to leave until tomorrow. And to make matters worse, my McDreamy is home watching Grey's Anatomy without me! How lonely...we rarely miss an episode together.

An upside of the day are that we went out to lunch as a lab to a Hungarian restaurant and I got to take back the rest of the bread, which was definitely the highlight of the meal--it's that light and squishy but hearty bread that goes well with everything. I ate the rest of it to keep me going through the afternoon and evening. There was also a party for a student's thesis defense and there was great chocolate cake. So it's been a good day for food. The baby LOVES cake!

Speaking of the baby, I think I felt some definite kicks today. I never really felt the flutters and swishy feelings that most people talk about. This guy isn't messing around with subtle movements--he's going right for the kicks and pokes. I'm sure that soon enough, I'll be tired of feeling them, but right now it's such a relief to feel *something* that I'm getting quite a kick out of it (no pun intended--groan!).

Event update: Bardic Madness last weekend was awesome! We were so fortunate to have visitors from AEthelmearc, Ealdormere, and Northshield. I met new people, heard wonderful songs and tales, took a bhodran class (which gave me the opportunity to try the bhodran I've had for years now), and even sang in the concert (I sang the song that Purple and I wrote for Alaric at the end of the reign...not many of the attendees were at our stepping down so I thought it would be a safe bet). Zsof and Alex and I also sang a song we'd just learned with the musicians guild a few days before. We sang it in 3 parts, which was totally fun. Feast was absolutely delicious, and I got to sit next to Master Garraed of Ealdomere and his lovely wife, Mistress Eleanor, who are just so amazingly talented and inspiring! He sang a song I'd never heard that brought me to tears. I think Alaric would like it, too. (Unfortunately he was at Command Camp so he couldn't attend the event.) Milica took awesome pictures...they're linked to the SCA Today website; here is a link directly to the gallery: http://sca.4th.com/node/8403

It's finally time to analyze some more samples; hopefully my protein is all the way off the column. Tomorrow night there will be no reason to stay late, so I'm hoping for dinner and a movie--a real evening with my sweetie! Yay!

    10:47 pm
I can't believe I'm still awake! I got up at 6 and went into lab almost right away. At school I did 2 Western blots and went to the gym, then left to go baby store hunting. I found 1 very small and lame store and 1 awesome, huge store that I will have to return to with A. I ordered a swatch of fabric from a bedding set I think we will like (it has castles and dragons on it!), and it sounds like they'll deliver the swatch to the house so I don't have to go back to the store to see it. I also went grocery shopping and cooked up a storm when I got home: zucchini quiche for me, pumpkin cheesecake for A, and a sort of a pumpkin creamy thing to share (you can't have too much pumpkin in October!). I've been watching the world series and cutting quilt squares for the quilts I promised my cousin's wife's twins (born in June--I'm so behind!). They're all done now, so now I'm on to online quizzes. I got a kick out of this one--I think it's right on, too!

I had a very long, very hard day. VERY long. And VERY hard. Sweet A left roses on my desk when he knew I'd be away so I found them waiting for me after a way-too-long meeting. I am very lucky.

    Oh BOY!
Apparently there were not enough new baby boys in the Barony of the Cleftlands. We are going to add another! The ultrasound looked awesome...it's so cool that you can see the baby's skeleton and organs and watch the valves of the heart as it beats. We're lucky to live in such a technologically advanced time...years ago I'd just have to go on faith that everything was OK in there.

Speaking of "in there," I think it has become pretty much impossible to hide my belly. I'm still wearing regular clothes but I think it will be a matter of days before the maternity clothes come out. Luckily I ordered a bunch through eBay which should arrive soon, and my mom bought me some very nice clothes this weekend when she and my dad came to visit. We went to Stan Hywet Hall (which I'd never seen even after living in Cleveland for 5 years!), bought maternity clothes (while Dad and A watched OSU cream BGSU), and went to some baby and kid stores. Pottery Barn has an awesome knight-and-dragon themed kids room. Too bad they don't think babies like knights and dragons too. I think my dad was tempted to buy the castle toys for himself!

I'm hoping for a productive week in the lab. Also, A got us tickets to Spamalot, so we will have a fancy night out. Can't remember the last time that happened!

But now we're enjoying being zonked on the couch. Nothing like neverending football on the flat screen TV to wind down an exhausting weekend!

    busy busy busy
I feel like I've been rushing around all week and now today (a Saturday!) as well. I'm rushing to finish 2 experiments so I can go home and help A finish up work on the study and basement...then I will rush to pack for a quick 1-day trip to see my best friend from college, which will consist of rushing down to Athens, OH and then rushing back in time to get her on a plane from Cleveland to somewhere in Kansas. Our main visiting time will be in the car, but I don't mind...as long as we can spend some time catching up, it doesn't matter where we are!

On one hand, rushing makes me frazzled. On the other hand, I really like being busy, especially when it's a balance of school-busy and home-busy.

I have 2 more baby quilts to make...the first one that I finished was very well received and I was pleased. When I sent it, I included a small gift for my older nephew, who insisted on thanking me on the phone. He has the cutest little voice...I will probably never delete that voice mail!

Calcium experiments take FOREVER to quantitate...I will probably have to rush back to my own lab to work on my other experiment while this computer takes its time thinking...

Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY Z! I hope your day is going great without too much pre-seasonal Christmas music to interrupt your celebration. ;-)

    Happiness is...
...a functioning vacuum cleaner. Especially after weeks of redecorating that generated quite a bit of dust, paint, wood chips, etc. on the floor. A fixed one of our two broken vacuum cleaners, which was a wonderful, brilliant accomplishment. Except that the vacuum had not been used since we lived in an apartment and had 2 cats. So now our freshly vacuumed rooms smell like...cat. Ick. I hope we can fix the other vacuum soon!

Something might be working in lab but every time I say something is working on LJ, it stops. So I will let it stay a mystery for now and if it ends up giving me data, I'll write all about it.

This week I got a package from my sister that had late Christmas, late birthday, and just-for-the-heck-of-it presents in it. They rocked! The Christmas present was a CD of a concert I heard in Italy at the church of Santa Maria del Carmine. The group is called Micrologus and performs all kinds of gorgeous early music. They are especially proficient in the work of Landini, whose songs are so lovely and complex. Anyway, I've been trying to get this CD for years since it is only sold in Italy. She managed to get it and I'm thrilled! She also sent a recording of music from the Cathedral of Notre Dame (mostly chansons directed by Andrew Lawrence King), a book of English country dance tunes (a staple I've always wanted but never owned), and a great but tiny red shirt that is probably too small for my poochy belly. But wanting to fit into it will most certainly serve as a great incentive to lose baby weight in 5 months or so...

We have the Jaguars-Steelers game in the background and I am trying to look at the computer as much as possible so I don't have to look at the awful, grimacing, whiny, sneery face of the Steelers' coach. If you ever want to learn how to screw up an otherwise benign face, study that guy. Ugh!

This weekend I get to see my best friend from college, who is teaching art at Kansas State University but will be at a printmaking conference in Athens, OH. I haven't seen her since my wedding! She is now engaged and I get to be her matron of honor. I can't wait to hear her wedding plans. The wedding is going to be the first weekend in June so I really hope it doesn't conflict with the Rose Tourney!

    A very balanced weekend...
I accomplished a wide variety of things this weekend...it was quite satisfying. Recently I've had some unbalanced weekends, where I end up staying too long in lab (or not long enough) and don't feel well rested going into the next week. This weekend was a pretty nice balance of many activities. Here are the highlights:

    1) A and I finished painting the study. It looks fantastic...what a difference a nice, warm color makes! We just need a new bookshelf and everything can be put in place. We will also probably frame a new print to hang up. I can't wait to sit in it with my cozy desk lamp on and be very, very studious.

    2) I got 2 big experiments done. One was mostly disappointing, but not a total failure. The other actually turned out as I expected it to (which almost never happens) and sets the stage for a bigger experiment this week. Nothing big yet, but it could become big...and I'll have more big experiments coming up. This week should be pretty exciting. Or a huge bust. We'll see.

    3) I did really well getting through some classes at the gym so I'm motivated to do more challenging workouts again. Yay for energy! It's great to have it back.

    4) I finished the baby quilt for my nephew and started another for one who will soon come into the world. I got most of it done in just 24 hours...I'm on a roll!

    5) Caught up on some important correspondence, watched some good football (Go Bucks!) and cooked some yummy food. All important weekend activities.

Now we are watching The Two Towers on the couch with our laptops...I bet a year from now this will seem like a total luxury...I guess we should enjoy it while we can.
